Friends of the Library sponsored a team in the Literacy Council's Spelling Bee which helps adults obtain GEDs, become US citizens, and secure better jobs. Members of the team represented us well with a tie for third place! That's a real accomplishment considering the difficulty of the words they had to spell!
In addition to the team members doing the hard work of spelling difficult words, FOL members attended the Spelling Bee to cheer on their team. These folks won recognition for being the best (or maybe the loudest) team! Or maybe they won because they were sporting the new FOL logo on their new aprons. Please look for more folks with these aprons at upcoming events!
You, too, can sport the new FOL logo by purchasing a blue and white tote bag! This sturdy tote bag can be used at the grocery store, on the beach, for children's toys, or for its original purpose: TO CARRY BOOKS! The tote bag can be purchased for only $10.00 at any library book sale, Friends of the Library event, or by contacting us using the 'Contact Us' form on the Home page.
Members of the FOL supported WHQR radio by staffing the phones for a recent fundraising drive. We had fun talking with donors who phoned in their pledges and were glad to offer aide to another community resource rich in culture and information. Additionally, FOL will be an underwriter for WHQR several times throughout the year. Be sure to listen for our messages!
During the last two holiday seasons, Friends members provided free gift wrapping to customers at the Mayfaire Barnes & Nobles store. Volunteers greeted customers at the door, directed them to the gift wrap area, and happily wrapped their store purchases! Satisfied customers generously made donations, providing support to the New Hanover Library system via the Friends organization.
