Our History

The New Hanover Friends of the Public Library, Inc. has been in continuous existence since its founding in 1976 as a non-profit corporation.

Vision
To be an organization that represents the community and serves its literacy interests and needs.
Mission
To provide support and advocacy for library services and facilities.
Staff
The organization operates without any paid staff and is supported by an active volunteer Board of Directors. We proudly serve a membership of five hundred–seven hundred members in any given year.
Friends of the Library (FOL) Volunteers
FOL volunteers support the New Hanover County Public Library system (NHCPL) in several ways, including helping at the FOL night at the bi-annual NHCPL book sales, downtown library history tour, providing refreshments at library programs, representing FOL at community and statewide events and most importantly, advocating for the importance and role of libraries in society through their words and actions.

Our Support
Through membership dues and donations, FOL provides the library with additional funds that help supplement its government budget.
Your Support
We are also seeking new Board members who are enthusiastic about our libraries and want to help us achieve our mission. Whether you volunteer your time, serve on the Board, or become a member, your support has an influence for our community libraries!
